Here's the question I get more than almost any other: "When should we book?" And honestly, it's a great question, because Indiana gives us a lot to work with. We get all four seasons, and each one looks completely different behind a camera.
The short answer is: the best time to book is before the spot fills up. But if you want to be strategic about it — and pick the season that actually fits your family — let me walk you through what each one looks like on the ground.
"Every season in Indiana has something gorgeous to offer. It's just about knowing what you're getting."
A Season-by-Season Breakdown
Soft Light, Fresh Everything
Spring in Indiana is genuinely beautiful, especially in Fayette County where things green up fast. You get blooming trees, wildflowers, that soft diffused light that makes skin look incredible. Temps are comfortable enough that kids aren't miserable, which matters more than people realize.
The catch: Indiana spring is unpredictable. We can have a perfect 65-degree evening one week and a cold snap the next. I always have a backup plan, but if you're someone who stresses about weather, spring requires a little flexibility.
Best for: families who want lush, fresh backdrops. Blossoms, green fields, that golden hour light that shows up just before sunset.
Long Days, Gorgeous Golden Hour
Summer is my sleeper season. People sleep on it because they assume it's too hot, but here's the thing: golden hour in Indiana in July is stunning. We're talking warm light, long shadows, that glow that makes everything look like a film photo. We just shoot in the evening instead of midday and it's perfect.
The heat is real though. I shoot evening sessions starting around 7 or 7:30pm in peak summer so everyone stays comfortable. Kids do better when they're not roasting, and the light is better anyway.
Best for: families who want warm, glowy, golden images. Barefoot kids in a field. That effortless summer feeling.
The Most Popular Season (For Good Reason)
Fall is when everyone wants to book, and I get it. The color around Connersville, Brookville, and the Whitewater area is legitimately beautiful. Reds, oranges, golds — it photographs like a dream. Add in the cooler temps that make everyone feel good, and fall sessions almost always have a relaxed energy that other seasons don't always get.
The honest warning: fall books fast. I'm talking September and October are usually full by July or August. If you have your heart set on fall color, reach out early. I mean it. I hate telling people I'm booked out because they waited.
Best for: holiday cards, Christmas gifts, classic Indiana landscapes. Book by July if you want October dates.
Moody, Intimate, and Underrated
Winter is the wildcard. It's not for everyone, but the families who do winter sessions almost always end up obsessed with their images. There's something about bare trees, frost on the ground, and everyone bundled up in chunky sweaters that creates this warm, intimate feeling that's completely different from every other season.
Snow is the jackpot. If we get a good snow day, I try to get out and shoot whenever I can. There's nothing like kids running through fresh snow with their parents. Those images are everything.
Best for: families who want something different. Cozy indoor sessions or bundled-up outdoor ones. Holiday mini sessions also happen here.
So When Should YOU Book?
If you're planning around the holidays or want fall color, book by July. Seriously. That's not me being dramatic, that's just how quickly those months go.
If you're flexible on season, I'd ask you a different question: what do you want the photos to feel like? Warm and golden? Summer evening. Fresh and soft? Spring. Rich and cozy? Fall or winter. That feeling matters more than the calendar date.
💡 Sara's tip: If you're booking for a Christmas gift or holiday cards, count backwards. Cards usually need to go out by early December, which means you want your gallery by mid-November, which means you're shooting in October at the latest. Book now.
One Thing That Doesn't Change
No matter what time of year you book, I always try to shoot during golden hour — that magical window about an hour before sunset. The light is softer, warmer, and more flattering than anything else. It's the reason my sessions are typically evening sessions, not midday ones.
Every season has a version of that light. You just have to show up for it.
- Fall dates book fast — reach out by July for October sessions
- Summer evenings are golden hour magic (and more available than you'd think)
- Spring is beautiful but bring some flexibility on weather
- Winter sessions are underrated — especially if it snows
- Sessions start at $175 — no reason to keep waiting
